This is a natural fibre bilum created by artisan Lena Kami. It has been made using the bark of a gumba tree, and the dyes are natural. The dye is from the seed of the lipstick plant mixed with salt.
Lena is a member of the bilum makers cooperative Singu Arts, based in Wewak in the Sepik River region of Papua New Guinea.
Singu Arts is one of PNG’s leading cooperatives, who’s gumba fibre bilums are made using traditional methods passed down through the generations. It works tirelessly to assist members of the cooperative, all of whom are women, to achieve autonomy, dignity and financial independence through the sale of their bilums.
Natural Fibre bilums are made from small trees and the weavers use natural plant based dyes and as such are not designed to get wet. Please keep them dry.
