This natural bilum has been made by Maria Tete from the Gifted Hands Cooperative based in Simbu in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea. Francisca Moiwo who runs Gifted Hands heard about Australia’s plastic bag ban and wanted to make a sustainable bilum shopping bag, and we have worked with the cooperative to explore this project. Double handled like the single-use plastic bags these are indeed a beautiful alternative to plastic that are kind to the environment.
This has been made from Lepa fibre. The Yellow is a natural dye gathered from plants from the Simbu province, and the purple, a store bought colour.
