This natural fibre bilum has been made by women from the Okapa Bilum Weavers group from the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea and has beautiful colour variation from the natural dyes they use. Simbuta means baby carrier, and these bags tie together to allow them to be hung in trees with a baby inside so they can be rocked to sleep in the breeze.
The Okapa weavers travel to Goroka to trade in coffee and bilums however, do so infrequently due to the condition of the roads. The fibres in this bilum are collected and twisted into string and the dyes used are extracted from plants and berries.
Please note, that due to the collective nature of Okapa Bilum Weavers Group we have been unable to attain the weaver’s name, so it is not listed on the card.
